Green Bay veterinarians practice stem cell therapy

Certified veterinary technicians placed DeNiro on the table in the operating room at 11:15 a.m. Monday so Dr. Allen Dunbar could remove about 40 grams of fat from the dog.
The 9-year-old German shepherd was the first patient at Packerland Veterinary Center in Green Bay to undergo a new stem cell therapy to treat arthritis in his legs, spine and hips using adult stem cells culled from the removed fat.
The procedure, developed by Kentucky-based MediVet America, takes fat from the animal and separates out stems cells that are activated and then injected back into the animal to treat affected areas. Stem cells essentially are repair cells that can be used to rebuild cartilage or repair ligament damage, for example.
The stem cells are used in conjunction with platelet-rich plasma.
While joints were the focus of Monday's procedures, stem cell therapy has potential applications in other areas as well.
"Anywhere there is inflammation," said Dunbar, of Packerland Veterinary Center. "We're talking about renal disease, kidney issues, pancreatitis, liver disease. I really don't know where this is going to go, but the potential is exponential."
DeNiro's procedure was followed by Shadow, a 4-year-old German shepherd with hip dysphasia and a degenerative joint disease from a knee injury she had repaired several months ago.
Stem cell therapy is expected to show some results in the first few weeks with full outcomes known about six to 12 weeks later, Dunbar said. Stem cell treatment, on average, costs about $2,500.
For the owners of both DeNiro and Shadow, that cost was worth it for a shot at an improved quality of life for their pets, which, both said, are akin to family members.
"She's got such a big spirit and such a big heart, despite any pain she tries to keep up (with the family's other shepherd)," said Luther Kortbein of Cecil, Shadow's owner. "We hope to make her as pain-free as possible and let her express her spirit, run as best she can … and enhance her ability to enjoy life."
DeNiro's owner, Amy Noskowiak of De Pere, said she opted for the procedure to alleviate his pain and is optimistic about the potential outcome.
"I just want to see him run around again and to be able to go up and down stairs again without pain," she said. "He's a healthy dog besides the pain he is in."
Stem cells can be banked for use at a later time, if needed.
Animal Hospital of Howard is expected to do its first procedure today using the same Veterinary Stem Cell, Stem Cell Therapy for Pets, Adipose Stem Cell Therapy, Platelet Rich Plasma Horses, Adipose Stem Cell Treatment, Platelet Rich Plasma Dogs
system.
Dr. Maureen Thornborrow, one of the practice owners, said technological advancements like those touted by stem cell treatment only come along once in a while, and if results match claims, it could open a new avenue of care available to pet owners.
"It's one more tool for our patients with chronic arthritis and long-term problems that we're starting to run out of options for," Thornborrow said. "Our clientele is getting to the point where they don't necessarily want to keep medicating, they want to fix these animals. Stem cell therapy is going to allow us an option to help them out over the long run."
The American Veterinary Medical Association said it supports the use of stem cell therapies that have been demonstrated to be safe for animals, but research is ongoing to determine effectiveness of treatment.
For Dunbar, stem cell therapy is an exciting proposition.
"If we can get to the root cause of some of the issues these animals are dealing with, then we can help them the best we possibly can," he said before the procedures Monday. "Quality of life is what we're looking for."
